The Tuscaloosa Winds: A concert band made just for you!
If you're an experienced brass musician, woodwind player or percussionist, the Tuscaloosa Winds may have an open chair waiting for you this fall! The Tuscaloosa Winds features around 100 musicians - most of whom are community members, professors, band directors, and university students. In other words, people who really like to play! We will perform four concerts of exciting music for symphonic band during the 2009-10 season. Our motto is maximum music making with minimal rehearsal. Come blow your horn with us!What is the purpose of the Tuscaloosa Winds?
The Tuscaloosa Winds is designed to provide opportunities for wind and percussion players, who live within the Tuscaloosa area, to play quality band literature in formal concert settings. We strive to bring together music educators, musicians from the community, university students, and outstanding high school musicians into one organization where music performances can be achieved in a challenging yet enjoyable format. Our aim is to add to the cultural opportunities available to the citizens of Tuscaloosa and the surrounding areas, by providing audiences with programs containing a wide variety of band music that is accessible and enjoyable to hear. When do the Tuscaloosa Winds rehearse?
Founded in 2005, the 72 member concert band performs four formal concerts during its regular season. The “season” begins in August and extends to April. The band meets on Monday evenings from 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm. See our rehearsal & concert calendar.
Is there an audition?
Yes, membership in the band is available through a simple seating audition. Everyone is welcome to become a member of the Tuscaloosa Winds, we simply ask that you play for us so we can provide music to you that will serve our need for a full and rich ensemble sound. All of our members contribute to the performance, and so we feel that all parts need to have strong players. Schedule an audition! (Don't worry if you are rusty, we want you to play!)
What do I play for the audition?
Please prepare a short one to two-minute piece (your own choice) and any two-octave major scale ascending and descending. For the scale, please start and end on any note that you feel will comfortably show us your playing range. You may want to vary the articulation between the scale ascending and descending (tongue it on the way up, slur it on the way down).Need a scale sheet?
Need a solo?
Where are the auditions?
Seating auditions will be held at the Frank Moody Music Building found on the eastern edge of the University of Alabama campus in Tuscaloosa, on University Boulevard. When you get to the School of Music go to the Instrumental Rehearsal Hall on the second floor.Get directions!
Will it cost anything to participate?
