Information on joining the Tuscaloosa Winds!
If you're an experienced brass musician, woodwind player or percussionist, the Tuscaloosa Winds may have an open chair waiting for you this fall! The Tuscaloosa Winds features around 100 musicians - most of whom are community members, professors, band directors, and university students. In other words, people who really like to play! We will perform three concerts of exciting music for symphonic band during the 2008-09 season. Come blow your horn with us beginning Monday, August 25!

Q. What is the purpose of the Winds?

A. The Tuscaloosa Winds is designed to provide opportunities for wind and percussion players, who live within the Tuscaloosa area, to play quality band literature in formal concert settings. We strive to bring together music educators, musicians from the community, university students, and outstanding high school musicians into one organization where music performances can be achieved in a challenging yet enjoyable format. Our aim is to add to the cultural opportunities available to the citizens of Tuscaloosa and the surrounding areas, by providing audiences with programs containing a wide variety of band music that is accessible and enjoyable to hear.
Repertoire

Q. What does a season of the Winds entail?

A. Founded in February of 2006, the 100 + member symphonic band performs four formal concerts during its regular season. The “season” begins in September and extends to April. The band holds five to seven rehearsals, on Monday evenings, plus a dress rehearsal in preparation for each formal concert.

Q. Is there an audition?

A. Yes, membership in the band is available through a seating audition. Everyone is welcome to become a member of the Tuscaloosa Winds, we simply ask that you play for us so we can provide music to you that will serve our need for a full and rich ensemble sound. All of our members contribute to the performance, and so we feel that all parts need to have strong players.
